How a Florida university combined IT, analytics in healthcare degree program

When Florida International University set out to create a graduate-level healthcare informatics program in its business school, it faced issues such as university politics, attracting the right faculty and accommodating students from diverse backgrounds.

The university sought to create an academic program integrating analytics-driven decision-making and process design with an understanding of healthcare management and clinical processes, according to a study published at Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

One challenge was finding the necessary faculty, since the program needed teachers with both scholarly and practical experience in healthcare and technology. To do so, the university transferred relevant HIT research-focused faculty from the School of Public Health to the College of Business.
