Jeff Sperring Details ‘Cancer Moonshot,’ New War on Cancer

President Barack Obama, in his 2016 State of the Union address, called on Vice President Joe Biden to lead a new, national “Cancer Moonshot” program to speed up efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. The goal is to telescope a decade of advances into five years.

His words called to mind those of a Republican president, Richard Nixon, whose signature on the National Cancer Act of 1971 launched what would become known as Nixon’s War on Cancer. For nearly four decades, it has been a war of attrition, relying on health education campaigns to fight smoking and painstaking research to better understand the disease and develop treatments that extend life – in some cases dramatically, but in others, by just a few months at a staggering cost.
