Patient engagement efforts need more thorough patient input

As healthcare leaders work to understand patient experiences in their facilities, one of the key tools they use are surveys such as the federal Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, or CAHPS, surveys.

But writing recently at NEJM Catalyst, Paul Rosen, MD, associate professor of pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University’s Sidney Kimmel Medical College, argues that providers need to look beyond such broad-based survey tools and dig further in order “to gain a deep understanding of what the patient is going through in trying to navigate the care system.”

As he sees it, there are three ways hospitals can get more individualized feedback on the patient experience.
