While our recent research indicates that doctors and patients agree digital is great overall for patient engagement, when we look into the details it seems that the plethora of different digital media1 also confuses some patients (and their carers) as well as / rather than empowering them—a sentiment echoed in many conversations I have had with practitioners.
Accenture’s Patient Engagement Survey 2016 reveals a surge in adoption of digital health technology. Across the countries surveyed, the number of patients using social media or wearables for health has sometimes trebled—but I’ve also noticed a few revealing paradoxes:
A disconnect between patients and doctors about the extent of patient access should have to digital health records. It seems doctors are concerned about the need to think through the implications of full access for the doctor/patient relationship.
