For more than five years, urine and cerebral-spinal fluid samples from patients with Parkinson's disease have been locked in freezers in the NINDS National Repository, stored with the expectation they might someday help unravel the still-hidden course of this slow-acting neurodegenerative disease.

Beyond Verbal, a company that provides voice analysis software, has announced that its algorithms were used successfully to help detect the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in a group of patients. Results of a study conducted at the Mayo Clinic show that voice can be used as a biomarker for CAD, with certain sound characteristics pointing to the existence of the disease. The firm has already identified some voice biomarkers that indicate autism and Parkinson’s.

Cancer care is changing Someday soon doctors may not be so concerned with whether the disease originates in the colon lungs or breast Instead of categorizing cancers by body parts theyll use biomarkers like MSI-H or dMMR to identify and treat the illnessOn May 23 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted accelerated approval to pembrolizumab made by Merck and marketed as Keytruda for adults and children without remaining treatment alternatives and with metastatic solid tumors identified with a biomarker called microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) or mismatch repair deficient (dMMR)Tumors with MSI-H and dMMR markersmost commonly found in colorectal endometrial and gastrointestinal cancershave abnormalities that affect DNA repair inside the cell Its believed that Keytruda works by blocking a cellular pathway known as PD-1PD-L1 containing proteins found on the bodys immune cells and some cancer cells The drug may help the bodys immune system fight the cancer cells but the FDA doesnt specify howIn clinical trials pembrolizumab showed promise treating cancers

Stanford investigators used high-throughput analysis to link inflammation to chronic fatigue syndrome, a difficult-to-diagnose disease with no known cure.Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have linked chronic fatigue syndrome to variations in 17 immune-system signaling proteins, or cytokines, whose concentrations in the blood correlate with the disease's severity. The findings provide evidence that inflammation is a powerful driver of this mysterious condition, whose underpinnings have eluded researchers for 35 years. The findings, described in a study published online July 31 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could lead to further understanding of this condition and be used to improve the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder, which has been notably difficult.

Point-of-care diagnostics is a growing field due to the increasing need for real-time analysis of patient samples in remote locations. These diagnostic tools need to be reliable, efficient and cheap (especially in developing countries). Routine tests to measure biomarkers involve a method called Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA) where the relevant protein binds to specific markers and display different intensities of color based on the amount of protein. This method is well established, but the laboratory instrument used to read and interpret the results is often expensive, heavy and large.

An international team of researchers has developed new fluorescent probes able to detect specific biomarkers within cells. The technology may allow for early detection of cancer, monitoring the activity of drugs, and for studying intracellular processes. The probes consist of a peptide that sticks to target molecules and a novel fluorescent tag that can be tracked under a microscope.

Biomarkers (short for biological markers) are biological measures of a biological state. By definition, a biomarker is "a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes or pharmacological responses to a therapeutic intervention."

A paper published in Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology recommends a global standard for scanning biomarkers in cancer, in a move designed to bring research closer to clinical practice. “New imaging bioamrkers need to be established either as useful tools for testing research hypotheses in clinical trials and research studies, or as clinical decision-making tools for use in healthcare, by crossing 'translational gaps' through validation and qualification,” say the authors.

Medical researchers have identified novel biomarkers of risk for future dementia. Dementia is a rising tidal wave of devastation for families and society. Age is the biggest risk factor. Alzheimer's disease, which is the leading cause of dementia, is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, and more than 5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's. That figure is expected to triple by 2050.
